National Returning Officer and the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega yesterday night returned President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the duly elected President of Federal Republic of Nigeria as from May 29.
Announcing the final collated results from the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory, the INEC boss said Jonathan out of the 20 candidates that contested the 2011 Presidential election, scored the highest number of votes cast with 22, 495, 187 votes
According to the declared final results, former Head of State, General Mohammadu Buhari and the candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change came second with 12, 214, 853 votes.
Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) candidate, Nuhu Ribadu scored 2, 079, 151 votes, while the incumbent governor of Kano State and candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), Mallam Ibrahim Sherkarau polled 917, 012 votes.
Jega at the Electoral Institute, venue of the collation after the announcement of the results of the remaining seven states by their collation officers, with results from 29 states and FCT, having been announced earlier on Sunday certified Dr. Jonathan as having fulfilled the mandatory constitutional provision of scoring the highest number of votes and garnering 25 per cent of votes cast in two third of the 36 states of the federation and FCT.
Decalring President Jonathan as the duly elected President, Jega said: “By the power conferred on me by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I, Attahiru Jega hereby certify that I am the returning officer for the Presidential election held on April 16.
“That the election was contested. And that the candidates scored the votes as follow: ACN 2,079,151; ADC 51,682; ANPP 917,012; APS 23,740; ARP 12,264; BNPP 47,272; CPC 12,214,853; FRESH 34,331; HDP 12,023; LDPN 8,472; MPPP 16,492; NCP 26,376; NMDP 25,938; NTP 19,744; PDC 82,243; PDP 22,495,187; PMP 56,248; PPP 54,203; SDMP 11,544 and UNPD 21,203.”
Apart from Dr. Jonathan, General Buhari and Ribadu, none of the other 17 remaining candidates scored up to 25 per cent any state of the federation.
By the analysis of the results, President Jonathan won in 23 states of the Federation and the FCT and scored 25 per cent of votes cast in 31 states of the federation.
General Buhari won in 12 states but scored 25 per cent in 16 states of the federation. Ribadu only won in Osun states and managed to get 25 per cent in four states.
