Lionel Messi 2011

Lionel Messi - WikimediaLionel Messi 2011 - The ´flea´, as he is affectionately known in Catalonia is already being touted as one of the greatest footballers of all time, if not the greatest. He has scored a near identical goal to the wonder goal of Maradona against England in 1986.
Week in week out, Messi continues to set Camp Nou and the football world alight with his dazzling displays. So prolific is the Argentinian that he has a scoring average, like Ronaldo, of more than one goal per game for club. Just to put this statistic into contrast, a striker is deemed to be worth his weight in gold if his average is one goal every two games. Messi scores more than one goal a game. Sometimes he even scores four, like when he single-handedly destroyed Arsenal in the Champions League of 2010, and Arsenal were certainly not a bad team.

He has just been announced as the Ballon d´Or winner for the second year running, and who is to say he will not win it for a third ear in a row? Well, probably Cristiano Ronaldo over in Madrid. But it will be so hard for the Portuguese, talented as he is as a footballer. Barcelona are the team to beat, and with them, so too is the greatest player on Earth. The Catalonians are being touted as the greatest team in history, a claim helped by the recent 5-0 destruction of their fiercest rivals, Ronaldo´s Real Madrid. A Madrid team that had not lost all season previous to that game, managed by Jose Mourinho, the greatest, most successful manager in the world. And it is always Messi that grabs the headlines. If he stays injury free, it is difficult to see past Barcelona winning the league title and the champions league this year, and with it, Messi´s retaining of the number one player in world slot.
