EFCC raids Halliburton office in Lagos

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) this afternoon conducted a raid on the Victoria Island, Lagos office of Halliburton.
During the raid, backed by a contingent of armed policemen and soldiers, officials of the company said EFCC officials ransacked their offices and pushed the staff around. They later left with documents and some officials of the company.

Stampede in Kirikiri Prison as DCP deploys dogs to chase female inmate

Pandemonium reportedly broke out on Friday at the female Kirikiri Minimum Prison, Apapa, Lagos, as Alsatian dogs were allegedly let loose to “arrest” a female inmate, who is said to be mentally unstable.

An insider in the prison, who spoke with our correspondents in confidence, alleged that the Deputy Controller of Prisons in the female section, Mrs. Ada Oputa, had directed the female inmate, known simply as Shine Your Eyes, to be tracked down at all costs.

Hajiya Asabe King, Maryam Babangida’s Mum dies in Cairo

Hajiya Asabe King, mother-in-law to former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida is dead. She was aged 88. She died barely one year after the death of her daughter and wife of the former military leader, Maryam Babangida who passed away in an American hospital on December 27, 2009. The deceased died in Cairo, Egypt where she was hospitalized for what family sources called old age related ailment.

The late Hajiya Halima was said to have taken ill about a week ago. She was on Tuesday transferred to the Egyptian hospital where she died yesterday morning.

Nigeria Elected Into Board Of UN Women Agency

Nigeria has been elected to the 41- member executive board of the newly created UN agency on gender equality and women empowerment.
The 54 -member Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six principal organs of the UN, elected the new board members on Wednesday in New York .

JTF: Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND)

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) says it is set to launch fresh offensive, taggeted at oil companies and installations located in the region.
It said this was a direct response to the latest offensive launched by the Joint Military Task Force (JTF) in its bid to rid the Niger Delta region of those it described as criminal gangs masquerading as militants.

Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed emerges Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative(NEITI)

Bauchi State Police yet to track Alleged Kidnappers of the Twelve Year Old Jamila Ahmad

The Bauchi State police command says it is yet to track or establish contact with the alleged kidnappers of the twelve (12) year old girl in Bauchi about two weeks after the incident.
Speaking with newsmen, the Commands Public Relations Officer, ASP Muhammad Barau claimed that the abductors had not yet made any phone call demanding a ransom or any reward.
ASP Barau however assured that intensive investigation was still on to apprehend the suspects.
Meanwhile parents, relatives and school mates of the kidnapped girl have resorted to seeking Gods intervention to secure her release.
Last week the management and students of the ATBU international school held a special prayer session for the quick and safe release of the girl.
The twelve year old girl Jamila Ahmad was abducted on the first of this month at gunpoint from her mother while taking her to school in the morning.
She is a daughter to the former Registrar General of the Corporate Affairs Commission, Mr Ahmed Al-Mustapha.

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday said it will take a legal action against claims made by a Nollywood actress, Ufoma Ejenabor.

Addressing a media briefing on the issue, Segun Olusesi, the Chief of Staff of the Assembly, said the House will make the issue a deterrent case. The incident,which happened on October 29 on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, had two different accounts from the two parties.
While Ufoma claimed one of the vehicles (the Pilot) in the lawmakers' convoy hit her Nissan Xterra car, Mr. Olusesi, who claimed to be driving directly behind the Pilot vehicle said Miss Ufoma drove into the convoy, hitting the left rear of ‘the pilot ‘ vehicle's bumper with her right front bumper.

EFCC Recovers N2tn Property From Corrupt Nigerian Politicians

Landed property and business concerns worth over N2tr have been seized from 46 politicians and influential Nigerians in the last seven years by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following corruption charges preferred against them, SUNDAY PUNCH investigations have revealed.
The forfeited properties totaling 203 and scattered across the country and overseas were recovered on the orders of the courts.
This revelation is coming as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it would in the next few weeks seal and seize more properties. The planned seizure is a result of court judgments yet to be implemented.

Police Arrest 37 Year Old Woman Smuggling Rifles in Maize

Police have arrested a woman on suspicion of trying to smuggle assault rifles hidden in sacks of maize from neighbouring Chad to help arm a radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

The 37-year-old mother of seven was caught in possession of ten AK-47 rifles hidden in the sacks after travelling by boat across Lake Chad, which sits on Nigeria's remote northeastern border with Chad and Cameroon, police said.

Two killed in attack on Ex-Oyo State Deputy Speaker

Some unknown gunmen Thursday stormed the house of former Deputy Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kazeem Ayilara, killing one policeman and a guard.
Ayilara was among the eight suspended lawmakers against Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala’s style of governance.
His head was broken during the attack. He was rushed to the hospital.
The house of the Chairman, Oyo State House of Assembly Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Mohammed Inakoju, was also attacked at Ogbere-Tioya, Adeyemo, Ibadan.
The gunmen were said to have first visited his house before attacking Ayilara’s house at Kuola, Apata, Ido Local Government.
Inakoju was an anti-Alao-Akala lawmaker.

Soldiers Caused Blackout, Say PHCN Workers

Workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have said the presence of armed military personnel at its installations is responsible for the current power outages being experienced in some parts of the country even as the trade unions had called off their warning strike.
Speaking under the umbrella of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) yesterday, the workers explained that the continued occupation by military personnel deployed by the Federal Government in PHCN installations was counter productive and affecting the psyche of workers who were being intimidated and harassed by the soldiers.

Nigeria Labour Congress (|NLC) suspends strike

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress has announced the suspension of the three days warning strike it started today.
At a media briefing in Abuja, the union says it is suspending the strike till December 5 to allow for the intervention of the National Council of State whose meeting comes up later this month.
President Goodluck Jonathan and other senior government officials yesterday held a meeting with leaders of organised labour, but failed to convince them to abandon their planned strike for today. The workers' leaders however agreed to hold a meeting this afternoon to discuss the president's request for more time.

Police hunt assailants for plucking the eye of 84-yr-old woman

The Police in Minna, Niger State, have begun an intensive manhunt for a group of cow rustlers suspected to have plucked the eye of an 84-year-old Fulani woman, Hajiya Kaka Hadiza. The incident, according to Daily Sun findings, occurred at a village near Maikunkele some five kilometres from Minna, the state capital.

Hadiza was left at home by her children and grandchildren who travelled to Minna for business. While the octogenarian was relaxing in the hut, her assailants sneaked in and plucked her eye. The old woman was met in a pool of blood by the relations when they returned. She was rushed to the General Hospital, Minna, where she is receiving treatment.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strike begins today Nov 10th

Last efforts made by President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria to avert the three-day strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the delay in the enactment into law of the N18,000 new national minimum wage failed last night as the two parties failed to reach any agreement to stop the strike.
Jonathan convened an emergency meeting with the labour leaders at the Presidential Villa, Abuja but at the meeting, which lasted for about an hour, he failed to convince them to shelve the strike action.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the meeting, Acting President of the NLC and Chairman of the Strike Committee Comrade Promise Adewusi said the meeting did not change anything and the strike would continue this morning as scheduled.
“As far as we are concerned, the labour strike will continue,” Adewusi said. He added that NLC and the Trade Union Congress [TUC] would meet today to take a common stand on the issues.

Man attacks former President Olusegun Obasanjo at Lagos airport

A mild drama ensued at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, Monday, as former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, was attacked by a middle-aged man who pounced on him inside his car.
The incident occurred at about 9:20a.m.
The former president’s attacker, whose identity was not immediately known, had earlier before Obasanjo’s arrival attempted to enter the presidential wing of the airport, but was turned back by Air Force personnel manning the gate, especially as he could not explain his mission at the wing.
The man was not only denied entry, but was also driven away from the precincts of the wing and told never to return to the area, particularly as President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential jet was parked at the wing.

Goodluck Jonathan Seeks Truce With Nigeria Labour Congress Over Impending Strike

AS the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warms up for a three-day nationwide strike over demands for a new minimum wage, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said he was confident that the workers would soft-pedal, stressing that the Federal Government was already addressing the problem to ensure that the country is not grounded.
He explained that within the short period he assumed office as President, his Administration has demonstrated a Labour-friendly disposition.
Jonathan had summoned the Council of State meeting, last week, to deliberate on the matter. The meeting reviewed the recommendations of the Justice Alfa Belgore- led committee’s report on minimum wage.

Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) threatens to resume hostilities

A group claiming to be the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has threatened to resume attack on oil facilities in the Niger Delta from November 10 if Henry Okah is not released. Okah is facing terrorism trial in South Africa following the October 1 twin bombings in Abuja during Nigeria’s 50th independence anniversary.

The fresh threat is coming amid tension that politicians have infiltrated the ranks of ex-militant leaders to cause confusion in the country. Sunday Sun checks indicated that those behind the plan have been sending text messages warning that MEND is set to resume hostilities on oil installations if Okah is not released.

Actress Genevieve Nnaji did not host African Music Awards

Genevieve Nnaji did not host the Africa Music Awards that took place yesterday in London. It was gathered that the Diva yesterday wrote a mail apologising to her fans who are expecting to see her at the event as widely publicised.

PDP chieftain Mr Joseph Paago kidnapped and murdered in Rivers State.

A PDP chieftain and the immediate past chairman of Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr. Joseph Paago has been murdered. Paargo was kidnapped on Tuesday evening along Tai Gokana Road by unidentified gunmen on his way to Dere to attend a ceremony organized by Hon. Victor Giadom, the chairman of the local government. Paago’s dead body was discovered inside his white Toyota Avensis car along Afam Road in Obigbo Local Government Area of the state.

Paago was a lecturer in the Faculty of Law of University of Port Harcourt, when he was appointed chairman, Caretaker Commitee of Gokana by Govenor Chibuike Amaechi after the Supreme Court declared him governor of the state. Paago handed over to Hon. Victor Giadom, the present local government chairman.
