Nigeria Presidential Election: 119 tonnes of ballot papers arrive from China

A total of 119 tonnes (119,000 kg) of election materials including ballot papers have arrived the country from China ahead of the presidential election holding on Saturday.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that 89 tonnes of ballots papers arrived aboard a chartered jet on Sunday at about 11am.


According to sources at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, the 89 tonnes were brought in through Base Aviation, a Nigeria-based cargo firm.

The ballot papers, the source said, were immediately cleared and taken away by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The source added that 30 tonnes had earlier arrived on Saturday evening aboard a Saudi Arabia Airlines from China, bringing the numbers to 119 tonnes.

The materials, findings revealed, were handled by the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company Plc.



Several tonnes of election materials, including ballot papers, had arrived the MMIA, Lagos aboard Saudi Arabia Airlines penultimate Sundays ahead of the National Assembly elections.

According to airport sources, the materials arrived aboard a Saudi Airlines’ Boeing 747 plane which landed at about 10pm.

The materials, which also came in from China had a stop-over in Dubai, the Saudi carrier’s commercial hub.

The source, who put the weight of the materials that arrived at 30 tonnes, noted that several tonnes had earlier arrived ahead of the National Assembly elections.

Cargolus Airlines, another cargo airline, also conveyed some of the election materials into the country on Saturday morning, according to another airport source, who confirmed that more carriers were involved in the operations.
