Security agents (NDLEA and NCS) seize heroin shipment at Lagos port

The Nigeria Customs Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have intercepted a consignment of heroin aboard a vessel, MV Montenegoro, at Tin Can Island port in Lagos.

The Head, Public Relations, NCS, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, told Sources on the telephone on Thursday that the cargo was concealed inside propellers and cylinders found in the containers. He said the manifest for the shipment, which was seized on Wednesday, had indicated that it was building materials.

He, however, said no arrest had been made.

Adeniyi said, “Following an intelligence alert, a consignment of heroin was intercepted at Tin Can Island port in a joint Customs-NDLEA operation still ongoing.

“Container under security surveillance came to the port aboard MV Montenegro. So far, 10 wraps each weighing 11.2kg and other smaller wraps each of 1.2kg have all tested positive to heroin.

“The hard drugs were neatly concealed inside big cylinders and propellers and tucked in the container which was manifested as building materials. Full inspection and counting still on-going.”

Some months ago, about 450.400kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of over N4bn was seized at the port.
